Choosing right PBX for your communication needs….

If you have to buy a new EPABX system, your position as a customer is not at all envious. With scores of brands offering more or less similar features, it is actually very tricky to drill down on the most suitable brand from the most suitable vendor. While, it may be easy for corporates or people who have been associated with Telecom field, but it may not be that easy for a new customer or user of PBX.

SO to make things simpler I have plotted down a kind of checklist before coming to conclusion :-

1. Analog or Digital or IP Based

There is lot much confusion in choosing between  an Analog and a Digital EPABX. You definitely need a digital PBX when you are :

a. Having Call flow of 100 and above calls per hour.

b. You have a PRI interface.

c. You are going to use Digital phones know as KTS( Key Telephone System).

d. You intend to use PC as an operator console.

e. No of extensions in your organisation are above 50.

f. Number of simultaneous calls expected to be made are above 8.

For all other practical purposes an Analog PBX works as good as a Digital one and come at a much cheaper cost.

IP based PBX has its own set of advantages in terms of lower cost of ownership, scalability and interoperability. Recommended for companies having high volume of VoIP traffic, outbound international calling and need for telepresence. For a small generic installation IP PBX is a big no no due to cumbersome configuration and high cost of accessories like PRI/PSTN gateways, VoIP phones etc.

2. Support
Yes, after sales support should be the main consideration for buying a PBX machines. This is very important as PBX machine is supposed to work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, without any failure. All major business activities are dependent on this single equipment, PBX! Uptime of the PBX means availability of your company to outside world which means increased business. It is highly recommended to ascertain the after sales service reputation of your vendor. Practise of ascertaining and entering into the Annual Maintenance Contract for your PBX at the time of purchase makes it obligatory on the part of the vendor to provide you prompt service. Remember…A good paymaster gets good service in any trade!!

3. Range of Products and Connectivity options

The PBX of future should have universal connectivity like PRI/BRI interface, PSTN, GSM, VoIP connectivity and ability to scale over to fit your requirements in future. The system should have a modular design and up gradation options should be easy and affordable with minimum hindrance to your business.
